We all need a break from time to time. Parenting can be hard and sometimes parents and children need a break. It is important for children to have the opportunity to spend time with other significant adults in their life – grandparents, aunts and uncles, family friends, childhood friends, birth family, etc. Respite care provides a great opportunity to strengthen these family bonds.
Ideally, respite should be a time for parents to recharge and children to have fun! While finding appropriate respite care can be challenging, some of the best “providers” are already within your support network. These informal respite supports could be family, friends, other adoptive parents, members of your church, or other community groups. For those times when more formal options are necessary services may be available through foster care agencies, local recreation centers or special needs service providers.
A solid respite plan is the cornerstone of a successful respite experience. For some, there are additional challenges in identifying informal childcare providers when children have experienced significant trauma and loss. In those situations, Right Turn® can connect families to more formal respite services.
Right Turn strives to help make your respite a fun and rejuvenating experience for both you and your child. We will connect you to respite options and provide information about financial assistance that may be available. Call us at 888.667.2399 to create your respite plan.
